Continued Preparations

It is less than a month before I leave for Germany and my preparations continue.

After contacting several of the agencies in Germany via telephone to request an audition, I found that most need to hear an audition tape before they grant a live audition. So, my accompanist and I made a recording in the UW School of Music recital hall with my roommate acting as producer in the recording booth. It only took about an hour to get four good arias to send, so after ripping the tracks onto a CD and burning several copies, my audition materials went out in the mail almost two weeks ago. I have already received an invitation from one of the agencies, which means I now have two auditions set up in October. I am hoping to have a few more arranged before I go, so I will call the agencies again in a week or so if I haven't heard a response via e-mail.

On the musical front, I am struggling with the fact that I haven't done a lot of performing recently. I have only performed in public twice since June, and I have also learned a couple new arias that I have never sung for an audience. It is really great to be able to sing any new material in public before a big performance or audition, so I arranged two free concerts in September to work out any kinks and hopefully shake any nerves I may get from singing the newer arias. One concert will be in Olympia and one will be in Seattle. I decided to structure the concerts like an audition, meaning that I won't set the order of the program, but let my audience choose for me. I am making a program with all of my arias and their translations listed in random order. Then, I will put the numbers 1-7 on the back of seven programs and let #1 choose my first aria, #2 my second, and so forth. This will definitely keep me on my toes because we'll hand those numbered programs to random audience members and it's hard to say who will want to hear what.

My Eurail pass came in the mail a few weeks ago and I have my seating assignment for my flights. I have also arranged a ride to my apartment from the train station once I arrive in Germany from Amsterdam. All the little details involved in a trip are starting to come together, which is making me extremely excited to embark on my journey!
